CONTEMPORARY ART ASTONISHES AT BLINDARTE

The spring auction session at Blindarte has just begun. After the sale on 20th May dedicated to ancient paintings, art objects and 19th and 20th century paintings, on 26th May the Neapolitan auction house is proposing a rich catalogue dedicated to modern and contemporary art.

After the New York auctions dedicated to modern and contemporary art, the appointment with this sector is moving to Italy. The most engaging challenge for art lovers has been the Milanese sales held by Sotheby's and Christie's, which offered valuable pieces at significant prices. However, aside from the International market's usual entourage, Blindarte is presenting works of great artistic prestige, proving to be committed and ready to challenge the economic downturn that has affected the contemporary sector in the last months.

On 26th May, in just two sessions, Blindarte will be presenting to the audience about 350 lots, executed by highly appreciated artists within the global art market. The first session will start on Tuesday 26th May at 6.00 pm and it will be auctioning prestigious works like "I Dioscuri", oil on canvas by Giorgio De Chirico dated from the 60s/70s, estimated at 100-140 thousand euros. In the 50s and 60s, De Chirico returned periodically to his metaphysical themes, imbued with that neoclassical element and with a particular inclination for mythological themes. In the "Dioscuri", the work proposed by Blindarte, the two figures appear near their horses, in a seaside landscape, in line with the classical tradition. The subject of the Dioscuri, symbol of duplicity and of the brotherly love between the characters, was one of the dearest to the artists since the Twenties. Giorgio De Chirico and his brother Alberto Savinio loved to identify themselves with the legendary twins Castor and Pollux, mythical heroes bound by an indissoluble fate.

Besides this beautiful metaphysical canvas, Blindarte is proposing a rich selection of lots: an intense oil on canvas by Renato Gattuso from 1962, "Paesaggio di Velate", estimated at 40-60 thousand euros; an oil on canvas depicting "Fiori nel bicchiere" (Flowers in the glass) by Filippo de Pisis (estimate 32-38 thousand euros) and a painting dated from 1958, "La bottega dell'antiquario" (The antique dealer's workshop) by Achille Funi, estimated at 14-18 thousand euros.

The same session is auctioning rare drawings by Sironi, De Pisis, Carr?, Guttuso, Tancredi, and a rare felt-tip on paper entitled "La Garde" from 1964, estimated at 15-18 thousand euros, by Jean Dubuffet, as well as a sculpture of the "Fuga in Egitto" (Escape to Egypt), from 1937 by Arturo Martini, estimated at 14-18 thousand euros.

The second session, starting on 26th May at 7.00 p.m., will present the remaining lots and mainly works of contemporary art up to the most recent productions.

<P>Great interest for the work "Kunst=Kapital", unique piece by the German master Joseph Beuys, which consists of paint and application of paintbrush and paint tin on Cibachrome, portraying the artist inside a room in a natural science museum with a big Mammoth skeleton behind him. The work executed in 1984 is estimated at 130-180 thousand euros.

Kunst=Kapital (Art=Capital), present in many works and indicated on banknotes, boards and objects, expresses well the provocative spirit which characterises the artist, aimed at making the public think about the role of art in contemporary times. In a society governed by money, considered the most important value of all, Beuys states a new proposition in which the true capital is human creativity. This way the artist ends up thinking about one of the conceptions which has mostly influenced the western contemporary society, that is capitalism, and he digs deep down into this concept through the thorough knowledge of theoretical reflections like the economist Adam Smith's. Beuys thus decides to use his own voice and in particular his own image as a weapon to hit the capitalist society born with the second world war, according to the conception that Art can improve human life.

The same session will auction also "Study for Heads Will Roll II" by Robert Longo, marvellous work from 1984 tribute to the famous leader of the Talking Heads David Byrne estimated at 55-75 thousand euros, an oil on paper realised with four colours by Joseph Albers around 1950, entitled "Homage to the Square", estimated at 40-60 thousand euros, an elegant Hans Hartung acrylic on canvas from 1974, estimated at 65-85 thousand euros.

At auction also "Photographs", the rare collection of 12 photos by Andy Warhol, published by the Bruno Bischofberger Gallery in 1980, with shots taken by the artist of characters like Bianca Jagger, Salvador Dal?, Pope John Paul II, Liza Minnelli, Andy Warhol. The collection is made in a limited edition of 250 and is estimated at 40-60 thousand euros.

In the same section there will be prestigious works by Robert Mapplethorpe (at auction the Capri shot, the only one from 1983, estimated at 25-30 thousand euros), Keith Haring, Gilbert&George, Mimmo Paladino present at auction with various works including "Il pane della storia" (The Bread of history) from 1988, one of the sculptures which best represents the strong bond that the international artist keeps with his homeland, Campania and the area of Benevento, the bronze sculpture is estimated at 20-25 thousand euros.

Furthermore, Blindarte will be presenting Pier Paolo Calzolari with a great oil and tempera on panel from 1982 of the "Caprices" series, estimated at 55-65 thousand euros, but also Michelangelo Pistoletto, Daniel Spoerri, Joseph Kosuth, Hermann Nitsch, Shozo Shimamoto, Man Ray, Chia, Luigi Ontani, Sol LeWitt.

There will naturally be works by the great artists of contemporary Italian art like Carla Accardi, with a canvas dated from 2007 and an estimate of 20-24 thousand euros, and a sicofoil from 1969, estimated at 11-16 thousand euros and Mario Schifano, with various paintings and a paper from 1963 entitled En plein air N°1, estimated at 22-26 thousand euros.
