Enlarged Prostate Gland
Enlargement of prostate gland is a common on aging men. This condition is called Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH). Benign means the enlargement isn't caused by cancer or infection and Hyperplasia means enlargement. It is one of the common non-cancer prostate problems.
As a man matures, the prostate goes through two main periods of growth. The first occurs early in puberty, when the prostate doubles in size. At around age 25, the gland begins to grow again. This second growth phase often results, years later, in BPH.
One common symptoms of BPH include frequent daytime and nighttime urination, a hesitant, interrupted, or weak stream of urine, and leaking or dribbling of urine. Sometimes a man may not know he has any obstruction until he suddenly finds himself unable to urinate at all. Urine retention and strain on the bladder can lead to urinary tract infections, bladder or kidney damage, bladder stones, and incontinence--the inability to control urination. If the bladder is permanently damaged, treatment for BPH may be ineffective. When BPH is found in its earlier stages, there is a lower risk of developing such complications.
Treatments for BPH include active surveillance or watchful waiting. If your symptoms are not too bad, your doctor may tell you to wait before starting any treatment to see if the problem gets worse. You will need a checkup each year. You can start treatment later on if your symptoms get worse. There are also medicines available that can relax muscles near your prostate to ease your symptoms or medicines to help shrink the prostate. If treatment and medicines doesn't work, then you make undergo surgery.
