Review : Epson Stylus SX515W
Epson's new mid-range product, Stylus SX515W has started conquering the market steadily. This piano shaped printer clothed in black is estimated to cost around ?110. It's a multi-function printer that can scan and copy along with document and photo printing. It is studded with a 6.3 cm LCD screen for viewing pictures before printing and to navigate through the menu. The feature that stands out is its ability to connect to networks wirelessly.
Monochrome document print outputs from the printer are below average. The characters are not well formed and are generally irregular. These prints are good for general use but not for ultra-important occasions such as business presentations and meetings. Its colour counterparts are a different breed altogether; colours are bright and characters and sharp. Prints over coloured backgrounds are above average. Photo prints are the best of the lot from this printer. Colours are natural and prints look studio like.
Claimed printing speeds are 36 pages per minute for both monochrome and colour, duh! We know for sure that these figures are bloated multiple times. We were right on this count as our tests displayed a maximum speed of 14 pages per minute for monochrome and inserting colour business graphics brought the speed down to 6 pages per minute.
Epson claims that a 4" X 6" photograph will take 20 seconds to prints. The question I want to ask if they are on dope while they come up with these numbers. A normal photo print took around 50 seconds to print but a draft photo print completed within 23 seconds, quite close to the claimed speed.
Epson Stylus SX515W is a good printer to possess, although the monochrome prints are not the best. Overall it's a manageable printer that can find a place in homes mainly.
